Still Missing, Not Forgotten: POW/MIA Walkathon keeps memory alive

Soldiers lined Fort Huachuca’s Warrior/Sentinel Field before dawn on Friday to honor and pay tribute to our nation’s prisoners of war and service members missing in action. The Fort Huachuca Select Honor Guard began the ceremony as they carried the nation’s and other flags across the field. Col. Dan McFarland, Fort Huachuca’s garrison commander, stood at the podium and addressed the Soldiers who were preparing to walk in the POW/MIAs’ remembrance.

“As we stand here today, there are 83,000 missing in action. It is important to know that the nation is committed; we’re committed to bring them home. What I want to say and what is most important, that while you’re gone, you’re not forgotten. We as a nation will keep our promise. We will not leave you behind,” he said.

Next, guest speaker, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Jackie Moore spoke with emphasis of our missing, but not forgotten service members. “I’m proud that we have a day set aside for remembrance for these invisible heroes.” Moore stated. “Today we honor our nation’s heroes who knew the hostilities of war and the anguish of captivity. We pause and we walk. Due to commemoration of this day, we honor all of the American patriots who sacrificed their freedom and their lives for our country.”

Maj. Gen. Alan Lynn, commander, Network Enterprise Technology Command, and Command Sgt. Maj. Gerald Williams, NETCOM’s command sergeant major, joined McFarland and Moore at the head of the field to lead the two-mile walkathon to honor the still missing, but not forgotten U.S. POW/MIAs.
