Teen driving safety, awareness program offered

The Southeastern Arizona DUI (driving under the influence) Task Force in conjunction with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, Sierra Vista Police Department, Department of Defense Police, Arizona Rangers and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers announce the development of the Teen Driving Safety and Awareness Program.

The program was designed to save lives and make highways safer through hands-on youth driver education. This program provides young drivers a chance to develop the necessary skills to respond to a variety of driving situations.

To participate, drivers must be 15 with a valid driver’s permit. Drivers 16 – 18, with valid driver’s licenses, are also invited. The program begins with a three-hour classroom instruction covering topics such as: dangers of driving impaired; basic vehicle operations; and

basic vehicle maintenance. The second stage of the program is five hours of actual driving situations such as: evasive lane change; ABS/non-ABS braking;

panic braking; backing; parallel parking; impaired driving practical exercise; and a track course. All instructors are certified law enforcement driving instructors.

Classes will be offered on: Nov. 17 – 18, Jan. 19 – 20 and March 16 – 17. To register, contact Bob Randall at the Sierra Vista Police Department, 452.7500 or Mark Dannels at the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, 803.3858. Class size is limited to the first 15 drivers to register.
