More than 40 spectators attended the flag burning ceremony outside Buena High School Monday. After the first flag was burned by one of Buena’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets, the audience was asked to join in helping in the disposal of the flags. “I was in the Army for 11 years and never got to see one of these. It was very neat,” said attendee Jason Raines who is the father of a JROTC member.

More than 110 U.S. American flags were burned Monday night as part of a retiring ceremony held by Buena High School’s JROTC. The members burned the flags, collected over the past two weeks from the community, because they were found to be in such a condition that they were no longer a fitting emblem for display. The only way to properly dispose of such a flag is to burn it.
