SKIESUnlimited now offering new programs

Suzanne Crawford, SKIESUnlimited instructional programs specialist, helps students create Melting Crayon Art. Creative Hands classes are offered on Thursdays, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m., for children from 6 to 10 at a fee of $40 per month for four one-hour classes. Students explore different creative art projects every month.

SKIESUnlimited, an Army Child, Youth and School Services Program on Fort Huachuca, is now offering dance, gymnastics and writing classes. The name “SKIESUnlimited” combines the acronym for “Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills” with the word “Unlimited” for the unlimited learning possibilities the program offers to military children and youth.

SKIESUnlimited provides the framework or umbrella for all instructional programming in the CYS Services System worldwide. SKIESUnlimited encompasses instructional programs for children and youth, 2 through 18.

“We actually have hired two new dance instructors, so we have a very wide range of dance that we’re going to be offering,” stated Suzanne Crawford, SKIESUnlimited instructional programs specialist.

Dance classes are offered for youth 2 to 18. The only requirement is the participants still have to be enrolled in high school, according to Crawford. New classes include ballet/tap, jazz/tap, contemporary/lyrical, technique and stretching for dance, hip hop and African style dance.

In technique and stretching for dance, students work on flexibility, strength building and dance techniques. This program gives children the opportunity to start a personal strength and fitness training regiment to help with flexibility for dance.

A new gymnastics instructor has also been hired for the SKIES program.

“We have added some additional classes [gymnastics], and there is no waiting list for the gymnastics programs,” Crawford added.

SKIES is now offering a gymnastics class on Thursdays from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. for children 11 to 17.

Also new to the SKIES program are a few writing classes.

“We have a creative writing and fiction program; we have college prep tech writing and high school prep tech writing,” explained Crawford.

Kelly Montana and Jessica Clayburn secure Aliana Soto, 7, at the execution of a forward roll on the uneven bars. Gymnastics classes take place Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. For information, call 533.4828.

Drama and musical theatre classes are also going to be offered. Students will discover creative ways to express themselves on stage through dramatic and fun play, exercising their bodies and minds as professional actors would. Self-discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence are also emphasized — all while preparing and performing.

SKIESUnlimited is re-opening and offering cooking classes, Crafty Hands, Creative Hands, and Bringing Stories to Life. Crafty and Creative Hands offer a wide variety of art projects, long- and short-term, as well as different types of media.

“Bringing stories to life is a program for 3 to 5 year olds. Storytelling helps children develop a sense of story structure and understanding about the language that contributes to their comprehension of text. In this class, children will make art projects related to the stories, so they can retell the story and, in the process, build their vocabulary and story structure,” added Crawford.

SKIESUnlimited is still offering the very popular tae kwon do program, karate and piano classes. However, there is a waiting list for these programs.

For more information or to register for these or any of the continuing SKIESUnlimited programs, contact Parent Central Services, 533.0738.
