Colonel Smith Middle School

Sixth grade students in Linda Dailing’s and Andrea Weigle’s Language Arts classes recently read the short story “Nadia the Willful” by Sue Alexander. This story explores the ways in which people hold onto memories. Students were asked to recall a happy memory or an important occasion when family members and friends gathered together, and to make connections as to why these memories are valuable to them and their family. This story meets the education common core standard RL2: Determine a theme or central idea of a test and tell how it is conveyed through particular details. It also meets RL3: Describe how the characters change as the plot moves toward a resolution.
