ACS shares items of interest for military Families

New hours of operations for Army Community Service are as follows:

Monday – Wednesday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Thursday 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Friday 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

ACS will be closing early today at 1 p.m.

Holidays are stressful times for everyone. The Family Advocacy Program staff at ACS offers tips to help reduce stress over the holidays.

Recognize your limitations. If you feel that you are being stretched from one end to another, take a moment to prioritize what is important and let the rest wait until you have the time to deal with it. Practice saying no. Avoid over committing yourself.

Recognize your triggers. Knowing what triggers your emotions, unhealthy habits and stress will help you maintain a healthy emotion and physical balance.

Let things roll off your back. Pick your battles. Not everything is worth stressing about or arguing over. Pick what is important to you and don’t worry about what you cannot control.

Set up family time via Skype some time during the holiday. This is a way to communicate with family members who live out of the area.

Take a moment for yourself. Reflection, mediation, or taking a breather, these are all ways to take a moment and take care of yourself. Research states that spending 15 minutes by yourself, away from distractions, is one of the best tools to reduce stress and frustration. Reading, closing the door for a nap, walking, exercising, listening to music are all free and easy gifts that you can give yourself over the holiday period.

Louise Shrecengost is the New Parent Support home visitor. The program provides support and education to military Families through home visitation for Families prenatally, and Families with children from birth to 3. The program addresses a variety of educational topics such as infant care, military Family life, discipline, sibling rivalry, communication with children. It also addresses stress management tips, developmental norms, potty training, nutrition of infants, toddlers, expectant and post-partum moms, as well as deployment issues, safety issues, parenting skills and more.

There will be a parent/tot playgroup starting Jan. 16, a parent/tot reading group starting later in January, and Baby Bootcamp, with classes on infant care and topics relating to parenting, will start Jan. 15, and we are looking at other classes to do later in the year.

Contact the program either for information or to join the program or classes through the ACS NPSP office, 533.8961.
