Colonel Smith Middle School

Students at Colonel Smith Middle School are preparing for their annual Multicultural Day to be held on Wednesday. Sixth grade students are learning about the different holidays that countries around the world celebrate at this time of year. They have done Internet and library research on customs and traditions unique to each country and will present that information in both digital and traditional formats. Presentations also include a look at the country’s currency, famous sights, and scientists or inventors who have had an impact on America.

Under the direction of physical education teacher, Joni Giacomino, sixth- and seventh-grade students will perform dances from around the world, and eighth graders will demonstrate traditional games. Karl Balandovich’s eighth-grade choir will kick off the celebration with Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa songs. Nancy Murphy’s art students are making flags, emblems and banners for the event.

After performances and demonstrations in the gym, students will have an opportunity to make and take home traditional holiday crafts from a variety of cultures. An ethnic food sampling will be provided by parent volunteers.

The program begins at 8:15 a.m. in the school gym. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend.
