As the holidays draw near and the year comes to a close, I hope you will all take the time to reflect on our many accomplishments and remember the great strides we’ve made as an installation and an Army. It has been a momentous year, both for Fort Huachuca and for our nation. I want to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication as we continue to build upon our accomplishments and enhance America’s fighting force. I urge you to place safety first and be prepared for the potential hazards that sometimes accompany the holiday season.
Many of you will be travelling during the holidays, and I encourage you to take vehicular safety very seriously. Properly outfit your vehicle with weather-appropriate safety resources, plan for delays, do not drive while intoxicated or tired, conduct a TRiPs assessment, and ensure you always have a charged cellular phone for emergency contact. If you are flying, arrive to the airport early, never leave your bags unattended, and do not offer to carry bags for other people.
If you intend to participate in winter sports, dress appropriately, wear safety gear, remain hydrated, and understand and respect your ability level. I also remind you to conduct yourself professionally at all times. Your conduct directly affects public perception of the Armed Forces, and we’re counting on you to set a positive example.
Finally, keep your homes safe this season. Turn indoor holiday lights off when you are not home, do not leave cooking unattended, only use approved indoor heating devices, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.
Enjoy your much deserved time off. Veronica and I hope you and your Families have a joyous holiday season. Though it’s easy to focus on receiving this time of year, it’s often in the simple act of giving that we find the greatest happiness. Relax and celebrate over the holidays, but please stay safe and give the gift of life this year by placing safety first and encouraging others to do the same. We need everyone to return safely so we can start the year 2013 strong!
Always Out Front! Army Strong!
