News Briefs – December 13, 2012

Vehicle burglaries on rise

In November, the Sierra Vista Police Department saw a 100-percent increase in vehicle burglaries from the same timeframe as last year. Most occurred in apartment complexes and shopping centers where there is a large concentration of vehicles. Based on police reports, most of the vehicles were left unsecured and many of the items taken were left in plain sight. Criminals are going through parking lots and checking door handles.

The SVPD advises motorists to make sure to lock vehicle doors and remove items from view. Also, those who observe people wandering around a parking lot looking into vehicles should call the police and report it at 452.7500.

Public input sought on transportation

The City of Sierra Vista and the Arizona Department of Transportation are seeking public input for an on-going study to identify options to improve traffic flow by reducing the number of motorists who drive alone to work or school.

The ADOT-administered study has launched an on-line survey to learn more about the travel habits of residents and to understand what alternative options would reduce single-occupancy vehicle trips.

Visit www.surveymonkey.com/s/SierraVistaSurvey to submit input. The survey will be open to responses through Dec. 21.

For more information about the study, go to http://www.azdot.gov/SierraV.
