Tree, Menorah lighting open holiday festivities on post

Members of the 62nd Army Band entertain the audience with seasonal music during Fort Huachuca’s annual Christmas tree and Menorah lighting ceremony Thursday night. According to organizers, this year’s event attracted between 350 – 400 people, probably due to warmer temperatures than last year.

The holiday season on Fort Huachuca officially began Dec. 6 with the annual Christmas tree and Menorah lighting ceremony at the Main Post Chapel around sunset. The warm weather drew a crowd of about 350 to 400 people for this event, and some members make this an annual affair. The ceremony has been held for at least 15 years on the installation.

In addition to the lighting ceremonies, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus greeted and distributed about 100 goodie bags, and members of the 62nd Army Band and the Catholic Children’s Choir entertained the audience.

“Our volunteers made 1,000 cookies, and we distributed about five gallons of chicken soup. It all went,” said event organizer, Fred Robinson, Fort Huachuca’s director of religious education.

It’s official! With the lighting of the Christmas tree, holiday festivities commenced on Fort Huachuca.

While the youth waited to see Santa with their list of requests for holiday gifts, they were able to color seasonal pictures and work on puzzles and word games.
