Students organize event to help animals

After learning that many animals were left homeless by the recent Hurricane Sandy, Donna Beck’s first-grade students at Colonel Johnston Elementary School organized a can-and-cash drive to raise money to send to the “American Humane Association Red Star Emergency Services,” for the animals affected by the hurricane. Their class raised $50 to assist the organization with reuniting pets and owners.

Mrs. Draeger’s third grade class has mastered multiplication and division facts. They have completed the cursive handwriting course, and all have legible handwriting. They are very excited to perform two plays at their monthly Readers’ Theater, “Washington’s Crossing,” and “Holiday Decorations.”

“Washington’s Crossing” is about Gen. George Washington leading the Continental Army across the Delaware River on a snowy Christmas night in 1776 to fight one of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War.

“Holiday Decorations” is about explaining what the star, menorah, kinari, faroles, lotus flower, Buddha, mosque and crescent moon mean to various cultures around the world.

The students will also sing some Christmas carols, and recite a poem about the order of the U.S. presidents.

The 5th grade students are wrapping up the semester. They are working on fractions in math and studying the colonies in social studies. The boys and girls are celebrating the holiday season by learning how different cultures celebrate. They also had a progressive craft party where they made a different craft in each teacher’s classroom.
