Fort achieves new record for water savings in 2012

Calendar year 2012 water pumpage (986 acre-feet) is a new record for water savings on Fort Huachuca and is the lowest water usage year beating the previous low water use record set in 2011.

The water pumpage for December 2012 was 26,471,000 gallons, or 81 acre-feet, and is equivalent to 0.869 million gallons per day. December 2012 pumpage (81 acre-feet) is 13.6 percent more then what was used in December 2011, 70 acre-feet. An acre-foot is approximately 326,000 gallons, enough water to cover an acre of ground under one foot of water.

The December 2012 pumpage is 41 percent less the 30 year (1982 – 2012) December average of 137 acre-feet.

Calendar year 2012 usage is 986 acre-feet and is 4.3 percent less, than water pumped during calendar year 2011 (1,030 acre-feet).

Treated effluent reuse for December 2012 was 2,580,000 gallons or 7.9 acre-feet. Calendar year 2012 reuse is 314.5 acre-feet and is 3.3 percent higher than what was used in calendar year 2011 (304.4 acre-feet). Treated effluent reuse is water that did not have to be pumped from the groundwater aquifer, a water and energy savings, to irrigate the Mountain View Golf Course.

Treated effluent for December 2012 delivered to the East Range Recharge Facility was 14,651,000 gallons or 44.9 acre-feet. Calendar year 2012 recharge was a total of 268.8 acre-feet and is 2.3 percent more than that was recharged in calendar year 2011 (262.6 acre feet).

No water was pumped at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Air Tanker Base on Libby Army in December.

The continuing reduction in ground water pumping is attributed to the educational efforts of the Water Wise Program, ongoing conservation measures for existing structures, the Energy Efficiency and Water Conservation Design Guidelines for new construction and an aggressive water leak detection program.
