Cowboy poets, musicians entertain homeschool group Twenty-two elementary-through-middle-school students from the Fort Huachuca Homeschool Group enjoy entertainment by cowboy musicians and poets on Friday at the Fort Huachuca Youth Center. Friday was the first day of the Cochise County Cowboy Poets Gathering in Sierra Vista. The Utah-based cowboy band, Saddle Strings, sang songs, shared background information about each one, and encouraged audience participation. Poet Rolf Flake of Snowflake, the Arizona town originally named after his great-grandfather in 1878, recited original poetry.

General Myer Elementary School

Everyone is invited to an evening of science, music and song!

General Myer Elementary School 3rd- through 5th-grade students invite the public to Science Night, Feb. 28, 5:30 – 7 p.m. when Science Fair projects will be on display throughout the school, and music classes will sing and perform on musical instruments in the school gymnasium. Students especially invite their parents, siblings, family members and friends.

In science class, third-grade students are learning about light. Through experiments, they have learned about translucency, transparency, opaqueness, reflection and refraction. The children especially enjoyed creating rainbows from prisms. They learned how white light bends to create all the colors of a spectrum. They can also describe how light bends as it passes through mediums such as glass and water.

For the school’s January’s Reader’s Theater, the children performed in the play, “Sojourner Truth: A Life Devoted to Justice”; recited a famous quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech; taught about the MLK, Jr. Monument in Washington, D.C.; sang “This Land is Your Land,” by Woody Guthrie; and told silly, winter-themed jokes.
