Fort Huachuca facilities, equipment support ‘Be Fit’ goals

Whether in the military or not, everyone should embrace a lifestyle which strongly incorporates physical fitness to keep the body healthy, fit and prevent possible injuries or illnesses that can be costly or possibly impact individuals for the rest of their lives.

Fort Huachuca offers a variety of physical fitness options to those who are looking to better their physical lifestyle. Regardless of age, gender or physical condition, there is an abundance of existing physical activities on Fort Huachuca to help people get into shape and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, or FMWR, manages the fitness facilities and sports activities on post.

Barnes Field House is largest facility

Barnes Field House, the main fitness facility on post, provides services, equipment and activities to suit everyone’s needs. These include: three racquetball courts; two basketball/volleyball courts; indoor and outdoor weight rooms; cardiovascular rooms equipped with stationary bikes, steppers, treadmills, elliptical devices, rowing machines and spin bikes; a fitness center; an indoor, heated pool; and an outdoor, 400-meter track. Active duty military, Families, retirees, and those who hold government-issued identification cards have access to this facility.

The staff at Barnes Field House offers an assortment of group fitness classes, each at multiple times, to ensure everyone can attend. Current classes include Spinning, Aquatic Fitness, Aerobics, Aquatic Zumba and fitness boot camps. Each class is taught by a certified instructor and ranges from 45 minutes to one-and-a-half hours. The classes are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure that a spot is available, arrive at least 15 minutes early.

One-on-one training is available through the fee-for-service personal training program at Barnes Field House. Holding either a National Academy of Sports Medicine certification or a National Strength and Conditioning Association certification, knowledgeable trainers assist in achieving and maximizing health and fitness needs. Call 533.2541 to schedule an individual or small-group session.

Barnes Field House is located at the intersection of Hatfield and Arizona Streets, across from the commissary, and is open weekdays from 5 a.m. – 9 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The pool hours are: 5 – 8 a.m., lap swim; 8 – 11 a.m., multi-use; 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., lap swim; and 1 – 9 p.m., multi-use. Weekends and holidays hours are 8 a.m. – noon, lap swim; and noon – 5 p.m., multi-use.

There is no cost to use the facility.

Use Eifler Fitness Center

Eifler Fitness Center, located in Prosser Village, has one racquetball court, two basketball/volleyball courts and fitness and weight rooms. An outdoor, 400-meter track and two softball and flag football fields on artificial turf are located directly outside the facility. Active duty military, Families, retirees, and those who hold a government-issued identification card have access, and there is no cost.

Hours of operation are weekdays, 5 a.m. – 9 p.m., and weekends, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Due to limited space, no group fitness classes are currently offered at this facility. Call 533.4723 for more information.

Bring children to FFC

For those who would like to bring their children to work out, the Family Fitness Center, or FFC, has several play areas, toys and televisions to keep young people entertained. Keith Wallen, recreation aide, said, “We cater to Soldiers and their Families with young children, allowing them to work out and watch their children at the same time.”

The FFC staff offers a limited number of group classes including Annihilation, Zumba and Yoga. The class descriptions and schedule can be found at www.facebook.com/HuaSportsandFitness.com.

The FFC is open weekdays only, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Any eligible FMWR patron may use the facility. For more information, call 533.0040.

FH offers Commander’s Cup programs

Fort Huachuca also offers a Commanders Cup program. Units across the post form their own co-educational teams and compete against each other in flag football, cross-country running, basketball, racquetball, soccer, softball, golf and volleyball. Tom Lumley, sports specialist, explained that each unit has a sports representative who is responsible for organizing their team, and the teams can be made up of any FMWR patron, 18 and older. Coaches meetings are held prior to the start of each sport to determine teams, schedules and locations. There is no cost to participate.

Other fitness options available

Other options for keeping fit around Fort Huachuca include playing a round of golf at the Mountain View Golf Course, hitting balls at Fort Huachuca’s batting cages, playing paintball at the Recreational Adventure Park at Pauley Field, bowling at Desert Lanes, or hiking in the Huachuca Mountains.
