Enroll in Citizen Police Academy

The next Sierra Vista Police Department Citizen Police Academy will begin Aug. 7. Classes will be held on 12 consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6 –9 p.m., for 12 consecutive weeks in the police department auditorium.

The free program includes hands-on simulated weapons training, evidence processing and participating in a ridealong with an on-duty police officer. Academy graduates will have an “insider’s view” of Sierra Vista law enforcement operations. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

American Legion 40/8 hosts breakfast 

The 40/8 of the American Legion is hosting a breakfast Saturday, 8 – 10:30 a.m., at the American Legion Post 52, 12 Theater Dr., Sierra Vista.

The Huachuca Saddle Club Gymkhana for Sunday has changed from an evening run to a morning run at Fort Huachuca’s Wren Arena. Books open at 8 a.m.; the Gymkhana runs start at 9 a.m.

Arizona Folklore Preserve performances

The Arizona Folklore Preserve welcomes its founder and artist-in-residence, Dolan Ellis, Arizona’s Official State Balladeer, back to the AFP stage Saturday and Sunday. Show times for both days will be 2 p.m. Doors open at 1 p.m.

Ellis will perform many audience favorites. He will also sing “Wildfire,” written to honor the “Hot Shot” firefighters who risk their lives battling one of nature’s terrifying forces.

Go six miles south of Sierra Vista on State Route 92 to Ramsey Canyon Road. Turn right, drive 3.3 miles into the canyon, and watch for the AFP entrance and sign to the left.

Play grass volleyball this summer

The Sierra Vista Grass Volleyball Series, run by Club Cochise Volleyball Association, have begun their summer tournaments. Doubles tournaments for men and women of all ages and skill levels are held on Saturdays throughout the summer. Learn how animals adapt

Carr House programs continue July 14, 1:30 p.m., with “Animal Adaptations.” Jane Chambers, local environmental educator, will provide a family presentation about how animals use structure and behavior to adapt to their environment. There will be hands-on materials and activities. The public is invited to attend this free program.
Directions to Carr House: From Sierra Vista, travel south on State Route 92 to Carr Canyon Road (at the Mesquite Tree Restaurant). Turn right. Drive about 2.1 miles. Japanese Cultural Festival planned

Sakura No Kai, a Japanese traditional art club, will hold a Japanese Cultural Festival Sunday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., at Sierra Vista’s Tompkins City Park, South 7th Street. Those interested in learning about Japanese culture or the Sakura No Kai Club are invited.

Thursday Farmers Market to move

The Thursday Sierra Vista Farmers Market will move to Veterans’ Memorial Park on Thursday, relocating from their old location on the corner of Wilcox Drive and  Carmichael. Summer hours are in effect, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Library friends hold book sale

Friends of the Library will be holding their monthly sale on July 13, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at 2600 E. Tacoma St., adjacent to the Sierra Vista Public Library. Also mark your calendars for Sept. 14, when the group will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a multitude of events at the same location.

Enjoy outdoor summer concerts

Residents are invited to the next free concert featuring the Simmons Family Band July 13 at Veterans’ Memorial Park. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The last two live concerts scheduled in July will be held on Saturdays starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Centennial Pavilion in Veterans’ Memorial Park. Scheduled performers include the Desert Swing Band on July 20 and the Sierra Vista Community Band on July 27.

Community groups plan Children’s Festival

Community groups have come together and plan a Children’s Festival on July 13, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Huachuca City Park, located next to the Huachuca City Fire Department, 505 N. Gonzales Blvd. There will be ongoing entertainments and special events.

Bowhunters shoot scheduled

The Huachuca Mountain Archers and Bowhunters Club will host a 3-D shoot at their range on post from 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on July 14. Traditional and compound archers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Hamburgers, hotdogs, soft drinks and water will be available for purchase.
Cost is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. For more information call 538.6895.

Books and Tots Story Time planned

The Parents as Teachers Program staff invite parents and children to Books and Tots Story Time. This event will be held on post at the Mountain Vista Community Center, 102 Davis off Lawton Rd. on July 18, from 10– 11:15am. Join the group for stories, songs and crafts.

Youth fun day planned in Bisbee

On July 27, the Bisbee community will host a Youth Fun Day from 2 – 8 p.m. in the Warren Ballpark featuring local agencies and organizations which will share information and provide youth-oriented activities and special events.
