SV public library celebrates Local Children’s Author Month

Scottosaurus-CoverDuring the month of July, Local Children’s Author Month, the staff at the Sierra Vista Public Library are celebrating different local children’s book authors. Each week, library personnel are featuring a locally written book by hosting a reading and interactive workshop with the authors. Each program begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Programs are free, and families are invited.

Next Thursday, Debbie Hickman will read her book, “The Exasperated Clock.” After hearing about naughty numbers on a clock face, participants will make their own clocks and ensure the numbers go where they are supposed to.

The City of Sierra Vista is home to a family of talented young writers. Brother and sister, Wilson and Kesmine Hickman, each have their own mystery series focusing on the exploits of a family pet. On July 25 they will read selections from their books and do a brief writing exercise with the attendees. They will also debut their newest books – just published this summer.

Extending just out of the month of July and celebrating the last Thursday before school starts, on Aug. 1, library personnel will focus on “Colorado the Flying Horse” by Suzanne Malpass. This book about a local mustang stranded in a raging river will serve as the inspiration for a horse-related craft as well.

Each of the featured books will be available for signing and sale by the authors and will be part of the library’s collection as well. Library personnel look forward to sharing these local books and their creators with both young and adult patrons on upcoming Thursdays.
