Civilian of the month – June, 2013

MARTINEZ-11JUL2013
Rhonda Martinez

Agency: Network Enterprise Technology Command, assistant chief of staff, G-1

Position and duties: Lead human resource specialist for the staffing team within G-1

How long at current assignment: Since March

How long in government service: More than 8 years

Residence: Tombstone

Family: Three children: Devon, 22, a sergeant in the Marine Corps; Blake, 20; and Emma, 13

Hobbies: Exercising daily, hiking, reading, collecting and shopping for rustic antiques, and barbecues with family and friends

Accomplishments:

“Making the decision to obtain a college degree was the top accomplishment of my career, as well as for my personal life. Had I not obtained it, I likely would not have been offered the internship in federal service. …

“Accepting a position with NETCOM and leaving CPAC (Civilian Personnel Action Center). This change has provided me the opportunity to experience life at a command level and gain an additional knowledge base that I would not have received at the CPAC level. …

“Mitigating workforce reductions in all three of NETCOM’s theaters. Not only was my team successful in ensuring no employees were terminated due to reduction in force, we were also successful in finding employment for more than half of the employees either elsewhere in the command or with other tenant activities.”

Advice:

“I believe it is important to step outside of your comfort zone to try something new. Taking the position with NETCOM allowed me to do just that. It has been a challenging and very rewarding experience working at the command level, rather than just performing human resources functions at the operational level.

I have a great team of coworkers who make the challenge to get the job done more exciting and appealing. We work great together, and couldn’t ask for a better group of people.”

Comments:

“John Lennon once said, ‘Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.’ Occasionally, we all need to neglect work a bit to focus on life – and vice versa. Luckily, my team has been blessed with great leadership who allows us to achieve this balance. For me, it is critical at the end of a long-stressful day to take some time for myself … the drive home helps, but going on a long run with a friend makes that stressful day easier to cope with.”
