Blues band will perform at TMAC

Thunder Mountain Activity Centre will present the “Blues, Brews & BBQ” Family Blues Night featuring the Andy T./Nick Nixon Band Sunday, 5 to 7 p.m.

The event is open to all ages, and admission is free. Food will be available to purchase, and a pay-as-you-go-bar will also be offered.

U of A Football returns to Fort Huachuca

The University of Arizona Wildcat Football Team will hold pre-season practice at Fort Huachuca. The practices are free and open to the public.

Practices are set for: Aug. 8 – 8 a.m.; Aug. 9 – 11:30 a.m.; and Aug. 10 – 8:30 a.m., all at Warrior/Sentinel Field near Eifler Fitness Center; and Aug. 10 – 5:30 p.m. (scrimmage) at Bujalski Field near Barnes Field House.

Coaches’ meeting set for flag football

The team coaches meeting for the 2013 Intramural Flag Football Program will be held Aug. 14, 10 a.m., at Barnes Field House. All letters of intent are due at that time. Team rosters will be due Aug. 30, and the program will begin Sept. 3, 6 p.m., at Barnes Field House.

Free movie set for Aug. 17

FMWR will present a free Moonlight Movie, “The Croods,” Aug. 17 at Warrior/Sentinel Field. The movie will start at dusk.

Don’t miss the next Right Arm Night

The theme for the Aug. 23 Right Arm Night is “Kickoff to College Football.” It will start at 4 p.m. at Thunder Mountain Activity Centre.

Right Arm Nights are free and open to everyone, including Soldiers, civilians, retirees and Family members 18 and older.

Free finger foods and a pay-as-you-go bar will be available. Enter the various contests to win prizes.

Could you be the next ‘Rising Star’?

FMWR is looking for contestants for the 2013 Operation Rising Star contest, a worldwide singing competition, based on the “American Idol” television series. Locally, contestants have the chance to win cash prizes up to $500.

The contest is open to all branches of active duty military, Reserve, National Guard or their military Family members 18 and older. Applications are available now online at http://www.OpRisingStar.com. The local competition will be held in September.

Outdoor pool open weekends only

Irwin Outdoor Pool is now open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Lap swim is available all day.

Irwin Pool will remain open weekends through Labor Day, Sept. 2, then close for the season.

The pool is open to all authorized MWR patrons.

Register children for Youth Soccer

Youth Sports and Fitness is holding Youth Soccer program registration through Aug. 16 at the Parent Central Services Office, Building 52111.

The program is open to youth ages 4 to 12, and the fee is $40 per child. Practice begins on or about Aug. 19. To register, call 533.0738.

FMWR is looking for food, arts and crafts, novelty and other vendors for the 2013 Fun Festival to be held Sept. 27 – 29 at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Fry Boulevard, Sierra Vista.

Free fitness classes offered

Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Division personnel offer free ongoing fitness classes, including spinning, Zumba, yoga, aerobics, water fitness classes and more.

SKIES offers various classes for youth

Child, Youth and School Services SKIESUnlimited Program is offering a number of classes, including computer, gymnastics, piano lessons, cooking, karate, tae kwon do and arts and crafts. Dance classes include hip hop, jazz/tap, ballet/tap, contemporary/lyrical, and dance technique and stretching classes.

Participants must be registered with CYSS. Parent Central Services is located in Building 52111, 533.0738.

ACS offers new parent groups

Army Community Service New Parent Support Program offers the following groups:

• Parent–Tot Play Group is a parent/child interactive play group for parents with a child 3 or younger. The group meets Tuesdays from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the park across from Burger King, and includes arts and crafts plus opportunities for children to play and have fun.

• Baby Boot Camp is an educational session for parents who are expecting a baby. The group meets the 3rd Thursday of each month, 3 – 4 p.m. in the ACS Conference Room, Building 50010.

• Tot Story Time, for children 0–4, meets the 3rd Thursday of each month, 10 – 10:30 a.m. at ACS. Reading to children while they are in this age range is considered critical to their overall development.

Studies show that children who experience active exposure to language have social and educational advantages over their peers.

These groups are open to all personnel who are identification card holders and are affiliated with Fort Huachuca.
