Five FH students receive MMH scholarships

Michaels Military Housing

Michaels Military Housing officials recently announced that five students who live on Fort Huachuca have been awarded educational grants from their affiliated educational foundation. These educational grants can be used by the recipients to pay tuition costs at any accredited college, university or vocational training program in the country.

The Michaels Organization Educational Foundation, a non-profit entity created in 1991 by The Michaels Organization founder and CEO, Michael Levitt, has awarded 183 scholarships this year to residents of their communities at multiple locations.

Since its inception in 1991, the foundation has awarded more than $3.5 million in grants to more than 1,600 students throughout all of The Michaels Organization’s properties. Since 2006, military housing residents have received a total of $320,000. Of that, $61,100 has been awarded to 21 Fort Huachuca residents since 2009 when Fort Huachuca housing became privatized. This year, five Fort Huachuca military housing residents received a total of $16,000.

In 2008, The Michaels Organization created the Michaels Employee Scholarship Program, or MESP, expressly to assist children of employees at The Michaels Organization in pursuing a post-secondary education. For the 2013-14 academic year, MESP gave $8,500 to four scholars of Michaels employees at various locations, including $3,000 to the first Fort Huachuca recipient.

The recipients were honored during a luncheon and ceremony Aug. 8 at the Pueblo del Sol Country Club. Scholars received a plaque and certificate. Additionally, local businesses that donated to the foundation were recognized. All funds for this program are raised through private donations and are matched two-for-one by Levitt and his wife, Pat.

The scholars and future plans are:

Kacy Sandlin, freshman, attends Cochise Community College to pursue a nursing degree.

Karrie Bowen, sophomore, is studying at Ashford University, Iowa, to earn a major in early childhood development.

Katherine Schwass, a two-time recipient of the foundation, is a junior majoring in nursing.

Lindsey Forbes attends Liberty University Online to earn a major in education.

Jessica Young, a junior at Northern Arizona University, is majoring in social work.

Phaydra Sperle is the first Fort Huachuca scholarship recipient under the Michaels Employee Scholarship Program. She is a freshman at Cochise College and plans to major in criminal justice.
