Don’t miss next Right Arm Night

The theme for today’s Right Arm Night is “Kickoff to College Football,” and it will start at 4 p.m. at Thunder Mountain Activity Centre.

Right Arm Nights are free and open to Soldiers, civilians, retirees and Family members 18 and older.

Free finger foods and a pay-as-you-go bar will be available. Enter the contests and win prizes.

Dance nights scheduled at TMAC

“Skirts & Spurs” Country-Western dance night is coming to Thunder Mountain Activity Centre tomorrow starting at 8 p.m. featuring country DJ music. Admission will be free and a pay-as-you-go bar will be available.

Old School Jam Night returns Aug. 31 starting at 8 p.m., with free admission, DJ music and a pay-as-you-go bar.

Fun Fest tickets on sale Monday

Advance carnival tickets go on sale Monday for the 2013 Fun Festival, set for Sept. 27 – 29 at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Sierra Vista. The City of Fun Carnival will be featured, with rides for all ages. Buy in advance and save $3.

Tickets will be available at Fort Huachuca’s Murr Community Center and Thunder Mountain Activity Centre, and at Buffalo Wild Wings and Ace Hardware in Sierra Vista for the price of $9 for 10 tickets.

During the carnival, the price will be $12 for 10 tickets.

All-day wristbands are also being sold at all locations for the price of $22 per day. Cost will be $25 during the festival.

‘Rising Star’ finalists will win cash prizes

FMWR is looking for contestants for the 2013 Operation Rising Star contest, a worldwide singing competition, based on the “American Idol” television series. The local competition will be held in September, and the top three contestants will win cash prizes of $500 for first place; $250 for second place; and $100 for third place. In addition, the first-place winner will have the opportunity to compete in the Army-wide competition.

The contest is open to all branches of active duty military, Reserve, National Guard or their military family members 18 and older. Applications are available now online at www.OpRisingStar.com. The local competition will be held in September.

Wine tasting trip planned

Murr Community Center and Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, or BOSS, will present a wine tasting trip to the Sonoita Vineyards Sept. 7, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

The trip is open to BOSS members only until Aug. 23. If space remains after that date, the offer will be open to adult authorized FMWR patrons.

The cost of $60 includes visits to four wineries, wine and finger foods, visits of wine cellars, and at the last stop, BBQ, live music, beer and wine tasting. Transportation will also be provided.

Outdoor pool open weekends only

Irwin Outdoor Pool is now open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lap swim is available all day during this time.

The pool will remain open weekends through Sept. 2, and then close for the season. It is open to all authorized FMWR patrons.
