Huachuca Canyon reopens – sign in, out at Military Police station

Scout reports

Huachuca Canyon is now open during daylight hours only. Those entering the canyon must sign in at the Military Police Station, Building 22336, on Christy Avenue, and sign out at the MP station upon departure. Be prepared to provide vehicle and contact information.

A sign posted at the mouth of the canyon provides additional precautions to take when traveling in “bear country.”

Follow these simple tips for a safer outdoor experience.

Don’t travel alone – bring one or more buddies.

Never approach either bear cubs or adults. Cubs are cute, but mom is usually close by.

Leave food at home, and do not carry it in your vehicle or on your person. Do not feed wildlife.

Carry bear deterrents such as bear spray, whistles and air horns. Carry them so they are readily available and be prepared to use them.

If you encounter a bear, slowly back away. Do not turn your back on it until the animal is out of sight. If it persists or follows, yell at it; use any other noise-making device available and wave hands above your head. If you are wearing a jacket, open it and extend the sides in order to look as large as possible.

Don’t ever run. If the animal shows interest, speak in a firm monotone voice. If it makes contact with you, fight back; do not play dead.

Report any bear sightings and encounters to the MP desk, 533.3000.
