Safety improvements begin on SR92, road work continues in SV

A five-year planning effort between the City of Sierra Vista’s Public Works Department and the Arizona Department of Transportation, or ADOT, are beginning to come to fruition as safety improvements involving construction of raised medians on a segment of State Route 92, or SR92, to enhance left-turn safety. The improvements are underway between Canyon de Flores and Glenn/Kachina Trail on SR92 where increased traffic have made left turns difficult, resulting in a number of accidents and fatalities.

The improvements will first provide drivers a safe access to Golden Acres with the extension of Canyon de Flores to a new roundabout connected to Golden Acres Drive. This portion of the project is expected to be completed in December along with the construction of a “jug handle” turnaround, which is a curved ramp that changes the way traffic turns left at an intersection on Glenn Road.

Construction of the raised medians on SR 92 will prohibit left turns by southbound drivers except at a signalized intersection. This project will begin after the local street projects are complete. The medians are expected to be complete by March 2014. The decision to construct raised medians was made after a traffic study confirmed that left-turns were leading to crashes as traffic increased on SR92.

The complete project totaling $3 million, which includes improvement to city streets, is fully funded by ADOT.

ADOT will maintain access to driveways and side streets with one lane remaining open in each direction at all times during this project. ADOT will provide construction schedule updates as the project progresses.

Sierra Vista Road upgrades continue

Road work on Coronado Drive between the State Route 90 Bypass and Carmelita Drive will continue for the next few weeks.

Two-way-traffic will be maintained at all times on Coronado Drive. Madera and Sonoita intersections will be under construction and restricted to right-turns only through Aug. 30. Detours and traffic control will be provided, however drivers should seek alternative routes during this time.

Use caution, observe construction speed limits, and watch for workers and vehicles entering and exiting the project site. Officials appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience.

Road work is subject to change due to weather and material availability and/or delivery.
