Chalk Talk – August 30, 2013

General Myer Elementary School

Mrs. Draeger’s third grade students have begun a unit in life Science. They have been observing lima beans with their hand lenses. The youth have removed the seed jacket and identified the radical, root; plumule, shoot; and cotyledon, leaf. It is important that students’ vocabulary increases while studying in various content areas.

The students have gone to the science lab to familiarize themselves with tools they’ll use on a regular basis. At Myer School, teachers use inquiry-based instruction. Students are studying how seeds grow.

Fourth grade students have been getting familiar with their classroom and school procedures. They have started reviewing place value in math. Reading groups are underway, and students enjoy changing classes to work on reading and language skills.

Students have also been getting familiar with the NEO boards, using them for math skills, writing stories and doing drill-type activities. The fourth graders are also excited about the competition between classes for the most points in reading.
