The Fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club, or FHCSC, hosted a Super Sign Up Event at the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre, Aug. 21, to kick off the 2013-14 club year, complete with a sign-up table, general information, local vendors and appetizers.

The non-profit service club, which has been a part of the community and the surrounding areas for over 60 years, hosts multiple events throughout the year, using the proceeds to give back to the community on and off post.

FHCSC holds four main functions annually to include a basket auction in October, a Holiday Bazaar in November, the Holiday Tour of Historic Homes in December and a golf tournament in April.

Last year, the FHCSC raised over $30,000, used to provide scholarships for high school seniors and spouses returning to college, and grants for local organizations within the community.

Barbara Ashley, FHCSC honorary president and wife of Maj. Gen. Robert Ashley, commander, United States Army Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca, emphasized, “Anybody can join – we want everyone. Men, women, anybody affiliated with Fort Huachuca … we really want younger spouses. It is an opportunity for mentoring, friendship and getting to know a little bit more about the military community and what we can do to help [them].”

Club membership is open to anyone with a military affiliation regardless of rank, branch, gender or age, and dedicated to making positive changes within the community. An application and information about annual membership fees can be found at http://www.fthuachucaspouses.com/we-want-you.html.

Sasha Griffin, the 2013/14 FHCSC president, explained that beyond the annual fundraising events, the club holds themed luncheons or evening gatherings for members on the third Wednesday of each month. These gatherings bring the members together in a fun environment, and provide an opportunity to meet new people and learn about the Fort Huachuca community.

The next club event is a member “Sports Backyard Barbecue,” Sept. 18, 6 – 8 p.m. in the backyard of 137 Grierson, one of the historic homes off Brown Parade Field. The cost is $12, and everyone is invited to wear their favorite team jersey or sports memorabilia. “All members are welcome, and if someone isn’t a member, they can sign up at the barbecue,” Griffin said.

To make a reservation, email fhcscreservations@gmail.com or call Griffin through Sept. 13.

New and current members can also join any of the various activity clubs available to members. Each club focuses on a different group interest such as Bunko, bowling or walking.
