Outdoor pool will close after Labor Day

Irwin Outdoor Pool is open for its final weekend of the season, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Lap swim is available all day during this time.

The pool will remain open through Monday, Labor Day, then will close for the season.

Dance nights scheduled at TMAC

Old School Jam Night returns to Thunder Mountain Activity Centre Sept. 7 starting at 8 p.m., with free admission, DJ music and pay-as-you-go bar.

Buy advance carnival tickets and save

Advance carnival tickets are on sale now for the 2013 Fun Festival, set for Sept. 27 – 29 at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Sierra Vista. The City of Fun Carnival will be featured, with rides for all ages. Buy in advance and save $3.

Tickets are available at Fort Huachuca’s Murr Community Center and Thunder Mountain Activity Centre, and at Buffalo Wild Wings and Ace Hardware in Sierra Vista for the price of $9 for 10 tickets.

During the carnival, the price will be $12 for 10 tickets.

All-day wristbands are also being sold at all locations for the price of $22 per day. Cost will be $25 during the festival.

‘Rising Star’ finalists will win cash prizes

FMWR is looking for contestants for the 2013 Operation Rising Star contest, a worldwide singing competition, based on the “American Idol” television series. The local competition will be held in September, and the top three contestants will win cash prizes of $500 for first place; $250 for second place; and $100 for third place. In addition, the first-place winner will have the opportunity to compete in the Army-wide competition.

The preliminary round of the local competition will be held Sept. 20 at Murr Community Center, and the final round will take place Sept. 27, 5 p.m., during the Fun Festival at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Sierra Vista.

The contest is open to all branches of active duty military, Reserve, National Guard or their military Family members 18 and older. Applications are available now online at http://www.OpRisingStar.com. The local competition will be held in September.

Wine tasting trip planned

Murr Community Center and Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers, or BOSS, will present a wine tasting trip to the Sonoita Vineyards Sept. 7, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

The trip is open to adult authorized FMWR patrons.

The cost of $60 includes visits to four wineries, wine and finger foods, visits of wine cellars, and at the last stop, barbecue, live music, beer and wine tasting. Transportation will also be provided.

FMWR is looking for food, arts and crafts, novelty and other vendors for the 2013 Fun Festival to be held Sept. 27 – 29 at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Sierra Vista.

Free movie set for Sept. 14

FMWR will present a free Moonlight Movie, “GI Joe: Retaliation,” Sept. 14 at Warrior/Sentinel Field. The movie will start at dusk. Free popcorn, hot dogs, water and soft drinks will be provided, while supplies last.

Don’t miss the Mutt March

A popular Fun Festival event will be the 5 kilometer Mutt March that will be held Sept. 28 starting at 7:30 a.m. at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Sierra Vista.

Bring your pet and participate in this fun event. Cost is $10 for pet and human and includes refreshments and a t-shirt. Sponsors and vendors will award prizes for contests in various categories.

Join friends at TMAC for lunch

The staff of Thunder Mountain Activity Centre invites everyone to join them for their lunch buffet, now served Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Cost of the lunch buffet is $8.95 for adults or $4.50 for children 5 – 11. All buffets include salad bar, desserts, rolls and a non-alcoholic beverage.
