‘Check out’ all you can do with a library card

Kristy Hom

Ahhh, September! It’s the time of year one feels compelled to buy school supplies, or settle into interests old and new. Libraries everywhere have noticed this trend, which is why September is officially “Library Card Sign-up Month.” So as thoughts steer to what you will be doing to spend the cooler months ahead, consider how the Sierra Vista Public Library card can help you get where you want to go.

People who haven’t visited the library in awhile may be surprised at the doors a library card can open — locally and around the world.

‘Check (the library) out’

Traditionally, libraries have been about checking out materials to enjoy at home, and people can still obtain books on just about any imaginable subject. However, library patrons can also check out audiobooks on CD, offerings from a large music collection, DVD movies, shows, documentaries, do-it-yourself DVDs and educational programs for people of all ages. Don’t forget — the library has a large magazine and newspaper section, as well.

Those who belong to a book discussion group can browse the library’s selection of “Book Discussions To Go” — complete kits of book sets and discussion materials of select titles. Check out a set for your group with a library card.

People who belong to a non-profit group can also check out one of two meeting rooms for group meetings or activities.

Another popular activity is using the library computers and Internet access for research, information-gathering and other computer access needs.

‘Check (the library) out’ from all over

Those going on a trip or on duty away from home can take the Sierra Vista Public Library wherever they go. Even if it’s 2 a.m., those who just want to read a good book have access. Using their library card numbers, patrons can check out media and download it to a handheld device, tablet or computer, any time, from any place with an Internet connection. Library patrons have access to e-books via Overdrive, audiobooks from the Cochise County library system, and a choice of current issues of more than 180 magazines via Zinio. All of these can be downloaded and enjoyed for free.

Library card is passport to databases

Many free resources are available at a patron’s fingertips, thanks to their library card. A partial list includes:

  • homework help (K-12, college introduction, adult education) via Tutor.com
  • language instruction through Mango Languages
  • genealogy research using Ancestry and HeritageQuest Online
  • academic and career practice tests, with Learn-A-Test
  • online, continuing education non-college credit courses, from Universal Class
  • research databases for all ages, through a variety of resources

Go to the Sierra Vista Public Library in person or visit www.SierraVistaAZ.gov/svlibrary to learn more about library offerings waiting to be enjoyed.

Visit the Sierra Vista Public Library, 2600 E. Tacoma St., to obtain a card. Bring proof of Cochise County residency and a picture identification card. Military personnel on temporary duty must bring a copy of their orders and military ID. A parent or guardian must be present and sign for a child’s card, if he or she is under 14.
