‘Rising Star’ finals set for today

Family and MWR will present the final round of the 2013 Rising Star competition at 5 p.m. today during the Fun Festival at Veterans Memorial Park, Sierra Vista.

Everyone is invited to watch contestants compete and vote for their favorites to help them win cash prizes and the opportunity to sing in the Army-wide competition.

Free entertainment at Fun Fest

The 2013 Fun Festival will offer free, live entertainment all three days. The schedule for today is: 5 p.m., final round of the Rising Star Competition; 7-11 p.m., “The George Howard Band,” a dance party band, will play the best in Motown, Jazz and R & B.

Saturday, 7-11 p.m., “Sapphire Sky,” a high-energy band, will play a mix of music, including top 40 dance hits, hip-hop, modern country, classic rock and sing-along anthems.

Sunday is Family Day, and the schedule for that day is: noon-3 p.m., free activities for kids of all ages, including the Barney’s Backyard Barnyard Mobile Petting Zoo; 3-5 p.m., the festival will close with country duo “Partners” performing.

Don’t miss popular Mutt March

A popular Fun Festival event is the 5-kilometer Mutt March at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Fry Boulevard, Sierra Vista.

Bring your pet and participate in this fun event. Cost is $10 for pet and human and includes refreshments and a t-shirt. Sponsors and vendors will award prizes for contests in various categories.

Register to win a dirt bike

FMWR and Sierra Cycles want to help put a “toy under the tree” by giving away a 2013 Kawasaki KLX 140 ADF Dirt Bike (Valued at $2,999) Dec. 14 at the N.O.E.L. holiday event.

Authorized MWR patrons over 18 can register for a chance to win the dirt bike at several upcoming events, including: the Fun Fest, today through Sunday at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Sierra Vista; Bikes and Bands, Oct. 5, Hatfield Street, Fort Huachuca; Right Arm Night, Oct. 18 at Thunder Mountain Activity Centre; plus several more events. A “traveling registration” box will move between various MWR facilities. In addition, patrons can also register at Sierra Cycles, Sierra Vista.

MWR Rents adds Saturday hours

MWR Rents has announced new hours of operation. In order to meet the needs of their customers, the facility has added off-duty hours.

Beginning Oct. 1, it will be open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

‘Bikes & Bands’ street fair coming

Family and MWR and Sierra Cycles invite you to “party in the street” when they present the “Bikes and Bands” Street Fair 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 5 on Hatfield Street, between Irwin and Bissel on Fort Huachuca.

“Brigade FMX World Wide Extreme Motorsports featuring the Globe of Death and BMX Freestyle Jumping,” along with the MI Corps Band “Counter Intelligence,” will perform. Food vendors will be available, along with bike displays, biker and sports gear, free activities for the kids including jumping castles and the rock climbing wall.

Murr seeks vendors for fall bazaar

The Murr Community Center staff is looking for vendors to display their items at their “fall bazaar” set for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 12 and 13.

The event will be open to the public, and items such as knit and hand-sewn apparel, candles, fragrances, wood crafts and other items will be available.

Vendors may pick up an application at Murr. The cost is $20 per space. For more information, call 533.2404.
