Fort Huachuca names Operation Rising Star finalist

Staff Sgt. Ryan Moore, Company C, 2-13th Aviation Regiment, portrays George Michael as he sings his song “Faith.” Moore was the runner-up at the 2013 Rising Star competition Friday at Veterans’ Memorial Park, winning $250.

Just in time for music show premieres like “The Voice” and “The X Factor,” Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation presented the final round of the 2013 Rising Star competition Sept. 27 at Veterans’ Memorial Park in Sierra Vista.

Judges and the audience voted for seven finalists. The singer advancing to the Operation Rising Star event in San Antonio is military spouse Angie Burgess. She sang Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love For You” in the competition.

“I am absolutely thrilled, I just can’t wait to have the opportunity to be chosen of the 12 [singers] to compete in San Antonio,” Burgess said.

Staff Sgt. Ryan Moore, Company C, 2-13th Aviation Regiment, took the runner-up position performing George Michael’s “Faith.” Staff Sgt. Ruby Lester, Company A, 304th Military Intelligence Battalion came in third place singing “Cups (When I’m Gone)” from the movie “Pitch Perfect.”

After each song, the judges’ panel weighed in on the performance giving praise and constructive criticism to pitch, stage presence and choice of music.

Judging the competition for a second year, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Tom Bauer, Military Intelligence Corps Band commander, said he was looking for technical consistency, good rhythm and pitch but also looked at each competitor from a band leadership perspective. He explained that he asks the question when judging if the contestant is someone he would hire to sing with his band.

The other two judges making up the panel were Jennifer Rickert, Fort Huachuca’s 2013 Military Spouse of the Year, and Emma Mayne, Sierra Vista resident, singer and former DJ of KWCD 92.3 FM.

The local Rising Star competition contributes to Operation Rising Star’s ninth season. The contest, based off of American Idol, is hosted by Army Entertainment, and open to active duty military, National Guard and Reserve personnel and their 18-and-older Family members. The Army-wide final competition begins in December.
