Buena HS JROTC active in October

Pvt. Garret Jones, Buena High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet, looks down the 60-foot rappel tower on Fort Huachuca, Oct. 17, wondering if he should rappel or not, while Sgt. Maj. Monty McDaniel, adult JROTC instructor, offers words of encouragement. All 91 participating cadets managed to master the 30-foot wall, and 72 conquered the monster 60-foot wall. Many cadets overcame their fear of heights and earned the coveted Rappelling Ribbon during the students’ fall break.

Cadet Cpl. Cody Lawrence, Buena High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, was one of the top marksmen with his score of 262 out of 300 during a rifle competition at Caesar Chavez High School in Phoenix, Oct. 19, where students competed against each other and other high school JROTC cadets. During fall break, Oct. 12 – 20, BHS cadets participated in the battalion’s annual camping trip in Sonoita. They also came in second out of eight schools during the 2nd Annual Southeast Arizona Orienteering Championship, another event that took place during the break.

 
LRC-Log
On Oct. 15, about 70 JROTC cadets participated in the challenging Leadership Reaction Course, or LRC, on Fort Huachuca. The LRC forces cadets to think outside the box and depend on teammates to accomplish the mission. Here, the purpose was to get the heavy log and every person across the water without either dropping the log or losing a teammate to the water.

From Oct. 28 – Nov. 1, the Buena High School JROTC cadets participated in a nationwide community service initiative to collect food for the hungry. This year, members of the five companies of Buena’s JROTC program collected 1,273 items. Company B (pictured) collected 410 food items defeating the four other companies by collecting the most food. The Buena High School International Thespian Society will deliver the food to the Forgach House crisis shelter which offers temporary housing for women escaping abusive situations.
