Chalk Talk – November 8 2103

Colonel Johnston Elementary School

Colonel Johnston Elementary School offers a special needs program, the Cross Categorical classroom. It is offered for military children who reside on Fort Huachuca, have an Individualized Education Plan and need more academic and social assistance.

Part of the program includes community-based instruction in which life skills are taught and practiced at both school and in the community. The students go on weekly field trips to lunch and places for therapy such as bowling, swimming and horseback riding. These outings help students in situations that may otherwise cause anxiety as well as enabling them to practice appropriate behavior in social situations.

The students just spent seven weeks swimming at the Cove, and last week they visited a farm where they were able to get pumpkins and learn about seeds. From now until Christmas, they will go bowling and to the Art Center on Fort Huachuca. Next year, they will be involved with CANTER, the local horse therapy group.

General Myer Elementary School

Valerie Lathrop’s third graders have been learning lots of new things. When asked the question, “What have you learned in third grade so far?” Here’s what students reported:

Hunter: “When you multiply, if you draw blocks, you know the answer.”

Samara: “We’ve learned a lot of fractions and multiplication. Now I know my two times tables.”

Collin: “I’ve learned a little bit of science and math, spelling words, and times, plus, minus and subtract.”

Ashley: “I’ve learned multiplication facts, lots of spelling words, a little bit of cursive and music.”

Connor: “Spelling words, dividing, apostrophe ‘s’ and reading.”

Arabelle: “Fractions, the word ‘separator’, a lot of new math and grammar.”

Jaden: “Third grade is awesome! I’ve learned a lot. I love it.”

Zaidah: “Be respectful, math and art.”

Da’ Shaun: “Cursive, math, language and reading.”

Isabel: “Math is hard, grammar is interesting, and coordinate graphing is fun!”
