What the Sierra Vista Public Library has to offer electronically

Last year I wrote about the differences in tablets and e-readers, but this December I’ll leave picking the device up to you, and instead describe what the Sierra Vista Public Library has to offer electronically — from a tablet, smartphone, e-reader, personal computer (PC) or Mac. For many things, there is definitely an app for that!

Apps are available

The library now offers just over 1,500 e-books to check out on your tablet, e-reader, smartphone, PC or Mac. On most tablets, smartphones and some e-readers, this is as easy as searching for the Overdrive Media Console through the Apple App Store®, Google Play Store®, or other app store on an electronic device. Connect the app to the Sierra Vista Public Library, and start browsing.

Connect to hundreds of magazines free of charge through the Zinio app. Download the app to your device first, but then I recommend using the computer or tablet to register your account before using the app. Visit Cochise.lib.az.us and click on the link below the Zinio advertisement to get more information on how to quickly register, along with how-to videos and user guides.

OneClickDigital offers access to thousands of downloadable audiobooks through its app for Android, iPod/iPad, and Kindle Fire users. Anyone with a PC or Mac can also access and download audiobooks, then listen to them on their computer or often transfer to another device. Once again, visit Cochise.lib.az.us, and click on the OneClickDigital link for more information on how to register, and browse the available titles.

Live Homework Help offers not just assistance to students in kindergarten through high school and college, but also to adults seeking jobs or seeking to improve their computer literacy, study for the GED exam, citizenship, resumes and cover letters, or how to help their children with their homework. Resources are available online anytime, and live, one-on-one assistance from 2 p.m. – midnight every day of the week. The Tutor.com app can be downloaded to all Apple products, and the website is accessible from any computer.

Even the library’s language-learning program, Mango Languages, offers an app available to Apple and Android devices. Learn 21 foreign languages, or take advantage of more than 14 ESL programs, while on the go.

Open an online library account

The staff loves to see you visit the library, of course. But we also understand that people can’t always make it by when they’d like. Through your account online, see which books you have checked out, renew, and change your address and library personal identification number, or PIN. Look for the My Account link once you’re in the library catalog.

The only thing people need to access this free material is a library card. Always free for the first card, or a small replacement fee for a lost card, stop by the Sierra Vista Public Library, 2600 E. Tacoma St. to get one. Just bring a photo identification card and proof of address within the county to the circulation desk and make sure to keep track of the PIN you’ll receive as well – it’s needed to access online material. Those here on temporary duty only need to provide a copy of their military orders to get a library card.

For more information, contact the library, 458.4225.
