Heroes dine for free

Nationwide, as a gesture of thanks to heroes across the country, local sponsors are recognizing military, firefighters, police and paramedics during “Hero Appreciation Week,” which began yesterday, with a free $50 dinner card good at 18,000 restaurants across the country.

Through Dec. 14, local heroes are invited to visit local sponsor, Sierra Toyota, 2596 E. Fry Blvd., Sierra Vista, to pick up their card. There is no obligation to purchase anything, and gift cards have no expiration date.

Toy drive assistance available

Sierra Vista Firefighter’s Annual Christmas Toy Drive coordinators are now accepting applications. Families wishing to receive assistance can apply through Saturday, 8 a.m. – noon at Fire Station #3, 675 Giulio Cesare. Applicants must live in the Greater Sierra Vista area including Hereford and Palominas. A photo identification, proof of residence (utility bill), and proof of parental/guardianship rights for the children signed up must be provided. Gifts are limited to children 12 and younger.

Hunt tags still available

Leftover hunt tags are currently available for purchase by mail or in-person on a first-come, first-served basis through the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

There are more than 10,600 leftover tags, including about 10,400 for various javelina hunts (general, juniors, HAM and archery), 173 for general turkey hunts, 57 for juniors-only turkey, and 16 for archery-only bear. A list of leftover tags is available at www.azgfd.gov/draw.

Mailed applications for leftover tags must be addressed to Arizona Game and Fish Department, Attn: Draw/First Come, 5000 W. Carefree Highway, Phoenix, AZ 85086.

Hunters may also purchase leftover tags by submitting their application in person at any of the seven Arizona Game and Fish Department offices. For locations and full information, go to www.azgfd.gov/draw.

Register now for holiday excursions

Sierra Vista Leisure Services is now accepting registrations for upcoming holiday trips. Call 417.9680 or stop by the Sierra Vista Aquatic Center “The Cove,” Oscar Yrun Community Center or Ethel H. Berger Center, 2950 E. Tacoma St., to reserve a seat on the bus. Must be 21 and older to register.

Upcoming trips include:

• Wild Horse Pass Casino, Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., $22 per person

• Tucson 4th Avenue Street Fair, Dec. 13, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., $30 per person

Holiday bazaar announced

The City of Sierra Vista Leisure Services will hold a holiday bazaar Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in both the Ethel Berger Center and the Oscar Yrun Community Center, 2950 and 3020 E. Tacoma St., respectively. Offerings include Christmas ornaments, quilts, paper crafts, photos, jewelry, aprons, miniature doll houses, furniture, pottery and more.

Moving market returns

Receive up to $60 worth of produce for $10 when Market on the Move returns to Sierra Vista, Saturday, 8 – 11 a.m., staging out of the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre’s parking area on Fort Huachuca.

Doubles racquetball tournament set

Join the fun! Military and civilians are invited to participate in the Holiday Insanity Doubles Racquetball Tournament, Saturday, at Cochise Health and Racquet Club, 4225 Avenida Cochise, Sierra Vista. Sign in at 8 a.m. and play at 9 a.m. This is a pot-luck doubles event meaning players draw a new partner for each round of play — games to 25 points with rally scoring each game. The event is open to the first 40 players who register.

Shooting competition announced

S-Stand will hold a 5-stand shoot Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. (registration opens at 9:30 a.m.), at the Sierra Vista Shooting Range, Shot Gun Road, State Route 90, between mile markers 334 and 335.

The first shot will be 50 birds. Cost is $25. The second shoot will be 25 birds at a cost of $15.

Western musician to perform

Award-winning Western musician, most recently honored by the Western Music Association as Entertainer of the Year and Female Performer of the Year for 2011, Juni Fisher will perform at the Arizona Folklore Preserve, or AFP, Saturday and Sunday.

Go 6 miles south of Sierra Vista on State Route 92 to Ramsey Canyon Road. Turn right (west), drive 3.3 miles into the canyon, and watch for the AFP entrance and sign to the left.

Christmas parade coming to town

The Sierra Vista Chamber of Commerce will host its 55th Annual Christmas Light Parade on Saturday, 5:30 p.m., to kick-off the holiday season. This year’s theme is “Cowboy Christmas.” This community event is open to everyone.

The parade route begins at the south side of 7th Street and Fry Boulevard and ends at the intersection of Fry Boulevard and Avenida Escuela.

Traffic will be rerouted around the staging area and parade route. Sierra Vista Community Band Concert

The Sierra Vista Community Band will present a band concert on Sunday at the Ethel Berger Center, 2950 E. Tacoma St., Sierra Vista. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 2 p.m. The concert is free and open to all.

Buena Choral Union presents “Sweets”

The Buena Choral Union will present their annual “Sweets” concert on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Buena Cafeteria, Buena High School, 5225 Buena School Blvd., Sierra Vista. For a donation of $4 per person or $10 per immediate family, enjoy a sampling of and listen to holiday music.

The concert is hosted by the non-profit Buena Harmony, and features members of the Buena Choral Union, including Rhythmix, Dynamix, Concert Choir, Buena Singers and the Men’s Chorus.

Huachuca City VFW to hold dinner

Huachuca City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10342 will hold a steak fry, with steak grilled to order, Dec. 13, 5 – 6:30 p.m., at 1301 N. Cochise, off State Route 90. Dinner costs $8, with dessert for an additional $1. A bake sale is planned during the same hours at the same location. No reservations are required, and both events are open to the general public.

Mall to hold youth holiday party

The Mall at Sierra Vista, 2200 El Mercado Loop, will hold a children’s holiday party Dec. 14, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., with free admission and activities. There will be games, face painting, cookie decorating and entertainment. Parents are invited to bring a camera to take a picture with Santa. Or, for a fee, professional photographers will be on hand to take one.

Church presents Christmas Cantata

The Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, or SVUMC, will present its annual Christmas Cantata on Dec. 15 at the 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m. services. The Cherub Choir will do the Introit at 9 and 10:30 a.m. the same day. This year’s special selection is “Holy Night of Miracles: A Cantata of Hope for Christmas” by Lloyd Larson. The music used to retell the birth of Jesus blends traditional carols with new Christmas anthems.

Toastmasters to hold open house

Huachuca Toastmasters will hold an open house Dec. 19, 11:30 a.m., at Murr Community Center. This event is free and designed to introduce the public to Toastmasters International and allow guests to learn more about how a Toastmasters club can help them become better speakers, evaluators and leaders.
