Workers at two busy Sierra Vista intersections are installing the last two remaining red light cameras planned for Sierra Vista. They will become fully operational next year.

New cameras are being installed at the intersection of State Route 92 and Foothills Drive and will be the first to go online, starting with a 30-day warning period from Jan. 10 – Feb. 9. The camera will be fully operational the next day.

Cameras at State Route 90 and Fry Boulevard will start their 30-day warning period from Feb. 10 – March 12 and will be fully operational on March 13.

“Our goal with the safety cameras is to change drivers’ behavior and remind residents to use safe driving habits that can save lives,” says Tom Alinen, Sierra Vista chief of police.

When driver behaviors are captured by the cameras, a trained officer reviews the video and determines if a violation actually occurred before a citation is issued.

Originally scheduled to go online earlier this summer, the safety camera project was placed on hold while Redflex, the City’s vendor, updated state right-of-way permits to allow for the use of new cameras with the Doppler technology used in radar guns to detect vehicle speeds using radio waves.

The new cameras will accurately track multiple lanes of traffic and pinpoint vehicles that run red lights and travel at more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.

The photo enforcement safety cameras are another resource that helps officers keep the community safe from preventable accidents.

“Major accidents with injuries and fatalities usually take place in the State Route 90/92 corridor, says Alinen. “The two cameras installed earlier this year are showing a major problem with almost 7,000 speed and red-light violations in the area.”

Since going live on March 11 earlier this year, the camera at State Route 92 and Avenida Cochise assisted officers with 1,169 speed and 1,770 red-light citations. At State Route 90 and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, 174 speed and 2,773 red-light citations have been issued since that camera went live on May 1.
