Mountain Vista Communities help former Huachuca residents save tree

From left, Warren Parker and Gerardo Gutierrez, Mountain Vista Communities landscapers, carry the crepe myrtle Lisa and Michael McCarthy planted more than 20 years ago on post to a truck for transportation. The Army retired Army couple will now enjoy the tree at their new permanent residence in Sierra Vista.

Army retired Sierra Vista residents Lisa and Michael McCarthy saved a personal piece of their Fort Huachuca history Tuesday. With the assistance of Mountain Vista Communities, or MVC, the crepe myrtle tree they planted over 20 years ago has moved to their permanent residence off post.

According to Rick Sperle, MVC facility director, the crepe myrtle was an undertaking to dig up.

MVC landscapers spent 4.5 hours getting the tree ready for transplant. Not only did they need to break apart concrete to get to the roots, many of them were wrapped around gas lines, so the gas needed to be shut off before digging could commence.

Despite the work involved, Lisa felt giving the tree a new home was symbolic of reuniting the past with the present. Two decades ago, both she and her husband were active duty Soldiers in military intelligence analyst training, living on Madden Street. Lisa explained that planting the tree at that time helped enhance the front yard’s landscape.

After McCarthy learned about plans to demolish their former post living quarters, she decided to reach out to save the crepe myrtle from being destroyed as well. After MVC landscapers removed the tree, it was transplanted to the Family’s permanent residence in Sierra Vista.

“I saw that the tree was still here, so I wanted to take it and still give it a home instead of having it demolished, so we are bringing it to our final home — 20 years later,” McCarthy said.
