Need for food, sundries continues

Residents of Fort Huachuca’s Mountain Vista Communities collected and donated more than 3,000 items along with 17 turkeys to the Chaplain’s Food Locker in order to help ensure that Families in need have dinner for the Thanksgiving and coming holiday season. However, the need for food and household supplies doesn’t end once the holidays are over. To learn how to help keep the locker stocked, call the Chaplain’s Outreach Ministries program office, 533.4748.

Youth Coed Basketball League

Get ready for youth coed basketball, beginning Jan. 29. Skills evaluation for youth 9 – 15 is scheduled Jan. 6 – 7 at Joyce Clark Middle School.

Registration is ongoing at the Oscar Yrun Community Center, Ethel H. Berger Center and at The Cove. Avoid a $15 late fee by registering before Jan. 8. All divisions will be coed, and registration is $75 per player for those 5 – 8 and $85 per player for ages 9 – 15. Fee includes shirt or jersey. Present a copy of the child’s birth certificate when registering.

Basketball coaches wanted

Men and women 18 and older are needed to coach youth 5 – 15 in the upcoming Youth Basketball Program. Previous coaching experience is not necessary. Coaches are needed by Jan. 6, with team practices beginning Jan. 11. Volunteer applications are available at the Cove or online at www.SierraVistaAZ.gov (search “basketball”). Ask for the Coaches Information Letter when applying.

Square dance announced

The Thunder Mountain Twirlers’ Christmas Square Dance takes place tonight, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. with a plus tip at the end of the evening. Cost is $4 for members, $5 for non-members, and free for non-dancers. A-B-C Fun Dance starts at 6 p.m. and is free for first-time attendees. Snacks are provided. The dance takes place at Sierra Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 101 North Lenzner, Sierra Vista.

City facilities holiday hours

From Monday – Dec. 31, the Oscar Yrun Community Center and Ethel H. Berger Center will not have customer service available due to a staffing shortage.

Customer assistance is available at the Cove Aquatic Center: Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; and Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Customer service will resume at the Oscar Yrun Community Center on Jan. 2. Limited customer services will be available at the Ethel Berger Center after Jan. 6 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

All City of Sierra Vista offices will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 24 and 25, and on Jan. 1.

Special Christmas Eve service

Christmas Eve services at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church will begin with a children’s service at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The musical, presented by the combined children’s choirs and youth group, will be followed by a traditional service of music and candle lighting at 8 p.m. A third celebration of Christ’s birth will be a service with communion and candle lighting at 10 p.m. The community is invited to attend.

Youth winter break program planned

Kid’s W.O.R.L.D. Winter Break Programs for kindergarten – 6th grade will take place in two parts.

Week 1 will be held Monday, Thursday and Dec. 27 at a cost of $65 per child for the three days.

Week 2 takes place Dec. 30 – 31 and Jan. 2 – 3 at a cost of $85 per child for the four days.

Programs run from 6:40 a.m. – 5:45 p.m.in the Bella Vista Elementary School cafeteria, 801 N. Lenzner Ave., Sierra Vista. Fees include morning and afternoon snacks, field trips and activities. Parents provide lunches. An additional $5 enrollment fee for participants is required.

Train show planned in Tucson

The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, or SAVAHCS, will host the Tucson Garden Railway Society of Tucson Dec. 27, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Dec. 30, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Operational train displays will be set up in the R.E. Lindsey Jr. Auditorium, Building 4. Members of the Tucson Garden Railway Society will be on hand to explain the history of each display.

There is no cost and everyone is invited. Visitors should enter the Veterans Boulevard Gate, 3601 S. Sixth Avenue, Tucson, proceed east and turn left to parking lot “Q.”

Celebrate New Year’s Eve at VFW

Join members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9972, Dec. 31, to bring in the New Year. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m., followed with entertainment by Nightlife.

Cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple.

Pre pay with the bartender by tonight.

The event is open to members, guests and all active duty service members. It will take place at 549 Veterans Dr., Sierra Vista.

American Legion Post 52 sponsors Monday night football at 12 Theater Dr., Sierra Vista. The kitchen is open 5 – 7 p.m. The event is open to members, guests, active duty service members and Families.

Service members, their Families, civilians and members of the local community share a traditional holiday meal Tuesday at the Thunderbird Dining Facility and enjoy turkey, glazed ham, roast beef, yams, carrots green beans desserts and more. The meal offered another opportunity for everyone to come together again before heading to their separate holiday destinations.
