National Blood Donor Month celebrates donors, local collection scheduled

Armed Services Blood Program

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — January is National Blood Donor Month, and this year, Armed Services Blood Program, or ASBP, personnel thank donors for joining the ‘arms’ race.

“2013 was a great year for the military blood program, and we have you — our donors — to thank for it,” Air Force Col. Richard McBride, ASBP director, said. “You all came out by the thousands to join the arms race and we are so grateful!”

This year, their second annual Military National Blood Donor Month Celebration was held on Thursday at the Defense Health Headquarters in Falls Church, Va., ASBP brought together many of the military medicine’s past, present and future leaders.

Air Force Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Douglas Robb, Defense Health Agency director, kicked-off yesterday’s celebration. Guests also heard about the impact of blood transfusions from a wounded warrior. The celebration closed with the presentation of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award to two transformative military blood bankers.

The ASBP’s mission is to collect blood to support operations overseas and military treatment facilities worldwide. In addition to the Military Blood Donor Month celebration, ASBP blood donor centers worldwide will hold special ceremonies of their own to thank the many men and women who have worked hard to ensure that blood and blood products are available for military Families year-round.
