Army Community Services shares program information

ACS/Family Advocacy Program

Join Army Community Service, or ACS, personnel for classes that were successful last year. People are welcome to attend even one session.

Anger Management classes are underway on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. in the ACS conference room. All identification card holders are welcome.

Scream Free Parenting class, in partnership with the Chaplain’s Office, is underway on Thursdays at 11 a.m. at Kino Chapel.

Mindfulness at your location! Call to schedule a 30 – 45 minute session. It’s a great idea for staff meetings or units needing to find successful tools for stress and anger management. Contact Elaine Maher, Family Advocacy Program manager, 533.6873.

AER policy changes direct access

Under a new policy that took effect Jan. 1, all officers, warrant officer and non-commissioned officers E5 and above are authorized to submit requests for Army Emergency Relief, or AER, financial assistance directly through the installation AER office.

“Based on feedback we received from senior Army leaders, including the sergeant major of the Army, we decided that this is the right thing to do,” said AER’s Director, retired Lt. Gen. Robert Foley. “Over the last decade, these leaders have been entrusted with increasing levels of responsibility and have demonstrated the required trust and confidence to warrant this change.”

Soldiers E-1 thru E-4 are still required to complete the AER application and submit it to the unit company commander/first sergeant for their recommendation.

In addition to providing no-interest loans and grants for emergency travel, initial rent deposits and vehicle repairs, AER continues to be the organization of choice for Soldiers’ unique financial needs to include household and appliance repair, dependent dental care and initial home furnishings.

AER is a private non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to Soldiers, active and retired, and their Families. Raising Awareness of the Exceptional Family Member Program

The Exceptional Family Member Program, or EFMP, is a mandatory enrollment program that works with other military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support, housing, educational, medical and personnel services to Families with special needs.

The objective of the EFMP is to assess, document and code the special education and medical needs of eligible Family members and forward these coded needs to military personnel for consideration during assignment process.

Benefits of the program include consideration of the medical needs of the EFM during the assignment process and assignment of Soldiers to areas where medical and special education needs can be accommodated, provided there is a valid personnel requirement for the Soldier’s grade and specialty.

Those who think they might have a Family member who is eligible for services can quickly determine if they may qualify for EFMP enrollment. If any question below is answered “yes,” contact the ACS EFMP Office.

  1. Special education services that are specified on an Individual Education Plan or Early Intervention Services specified on an Individual Family Service Plan
  2. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder/attention deficit disorder requiring intensive management by any provider
  3. Any diagnosis requiring medical care above the level normally provided by a family practitioner in an outpatient clinic setting
  4. Potentially life-threatening conditions or conditions requiring intensive follow-up support within the past five years
  5. Chronic outpatient or impatient mental health treatment within the past five years.

Enrollment in EFMP does not adversely affect selection for promotion, school or assignment. Additionally, information concerning enrollment in EFMP or any data used in the program is not made available to local or Department of the Army promotion or school selection boards.
