Chalk Talk

Fifth grade student Brandon Deleon created this “blind doodle” in Nancy Murphy’s art class. He is a student in Amy Wolfe’s 5th grade class.

General Myer Elementary School

Art classes are in full swing for the New Year. Lynn Tompkins’ and Suzi Szymeczek’s fourth grade classes are learning how to weave on simple cardboard looms. Some classes are painting geometric paintings using either the secondary or primary colors. Others are working with “blinds doodles.”A “doodle” is an informal term that describes loose, squiggly lines. There are no mistakes in doodling, and it is a form of creative expression.

Students will explore many creativity exercises this quarter. Nancy Murphy, art teacher, is excited to see so many students bringing out their inner artist.

Students in Suzi Szymeczek’s fourth grade class have been working on an “Understanding Resources” unit in science. They did a virtual lab experiment about “How Big is Your Footprint?” During the process, they role played at being managers of a company and tested what type of energy would be the most cost effective and leave the smallest carbon footprint — wind, solar, gas or coal. They then had to write a recommendation about which one to use.

In a hands-on science lab, students used the scientific method to test different types of filters to determine the best way to clean dirty water. They also took a reusable item and made it into another item, such as turning a milk jug into a birdfeeder.
