Chalk Talk

Sean Street, 11, a 4th grade student in Suzi Szymeczek’s class, excels at weaving in Nancy Murphy’s art class.

General Myer Elementary School

Pam Sherod’s homeroom class has been busy with science projects which were on display at the school Feb. 6 for family night. The students are also wrapping up their unit on the solar system by making probes. Her reading group has been busy learning how to write using dialogue, and they wrote a dialogue about the librarian. They shared their stories with the librarian, Marsha Hamric, on Feb 7.

During physical education, class, Coach Larry Vaznonis has students participate in various activities, such as basketball, parachutes and crab soccer. Students crab walk to move the ball, and are not allowed to use their hands.

In Nancy Murphy’s art classes, most General Myer Elementary School students are working on mixed media underwater scenes. They are using crayons and paint to create wax resist scenes. Other classes are finishing fiber arts with their weaving projects.

The students love weaving so much, the class has run out of yarn. The class is looking for and would appreciate donations, especially thicker ply.

Their next project will be making collages, focusing on the works of African American artist Romare Bearden, in conjunction with National African American History Month. Students will use a variety of materials to create works of art. The art teacher will accept donations of older magazines to be recycled into collages.
