Local attorneys to provide free legal advice to veterans

PHOENIX — As many as 300 Arizona attorneys are volunteering their time to provide free legal advice to U.S. veterans and their spouses.

Many of these attorneys will participate in a free legal clinic at the University of Arizona Recreation Building, March 8, 9 a.m – 4 p.m., at The University of Arizona Recreation Building, 1400 East Sixth Street, Tucson. Veterans who wish to take advantage of the free legal services should schedule a time by contacting Norman Fulton, legal clinic manager, 1.480.363.6880 or nsfultoniii@gmail.com. Once a time is scheduled, the necessary forms will be provided to each veteran.

The clinics, which are sponsored by Arizona Disabled Veteran Foundation, will address many of the greatest current legal issues facing veterans. The upcoming clinic will address divorce, custody and child support, debt counseling and bankruptcy, tax issues, military discharge, upgrade assistance and basic estate planning.

According to Roger Ferland, partner at Quarles & Brady and a veteran himself, “The greatest unmet need for many veterans is the resolution of non-benefit related legal issues. For example, the inability to resolve Family law issues makes it impossible for veterans to take advantage of other benefits like education and housing. In many cases, legal issues get worse and more expensive if they remain unresolved.”

The free services are provided to all veterans and their spouses, regardless of whether they are disabled or not.

Ferland added, “These services are particularly important for older veterans and those who have been deployed several times. They may lack basic estate planning documents such as current wills or medical or financial powers of attorney, or they have let legal problems slide because of lack of resources.”
