Representing James Brown, Sgt. Maj. Lavander Wilkerson, 18th Military Police Detachment, entertains a packed house of several hundred people during the Black History Month celebration. He was among several Soldiers who performed as part of a narrated skit depicting significant contributions individuals made to help advance civil rights for African Americans in the United States.

Guest speaker Gwen Calhoun, Sierra Vista City Council member, speaks at the Black History Month celebration Feb. 21 at the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre. Calhoun, raised in an Air Force Family living in Texas, South Carolina, Naha, Okinawa, Yakoya, Japan and Washington, D.C., is married to retired Army Maj. Ernest Calhoun, with whom she continued travel as a military spouse. A community activitist, one of Calhoun’s key goals is encouraging community members, especially youth, toward more involvement in government processes.
