Tech savvy CSMS students, mentors awarded for winning big

Sean Paul, Colonel Smith Middle School, or CSMS, CyberPatriots technical mentor, stands to be recognized Monday by students, faculty, staff; Soldiers and Civilians in the CSMS gym. Students and supporting faculty and staff of the CyberPatriots team received certificates from Maj. Gen. Robert Ashley, commanding general, U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence and Fort Huachuca, and Christa Jones, CSMS principal.

Two groups of Colonel Smith Middle School students received recognition for their Science, Technology, Education and Math-based accomplishments during a ceremony Monday in the school gym.

Members of the school’s CyberPatriot team received certificates for being the third best middle school CyberPatriot team in the national semi-finals competition. The Verizon Creative App Challenge team took “Best in State” in Arizona for the application they created.

Altogether, about a dozen students and their team coaches and mentors received awards from Maj. Gen. Robert Ashley, commanding general, U.S. Army Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca. They also received his congratulations and praise.
Members of both teams were presented with certificates, and those who assisted them were formally recognized.

CyberPatriot team members awarded were: eighth graders James Draeger, 13; Justin McCrary, 13; and Sabrina Pierre, 14; and seventh graders Austin Greene, 13; Colin Owen, 13; and Carson Rice, 12. Adult mentors who worked with the students included Dan Guilmette, Kay Hawkins and Sean Paul.

Verizon Challenge members included: eighth graders Amber Cassidy, 14; Thomas Hakes, 14; Joshua Merrick, 13; Joel Pagan, 14; and Kelly Riley, 13. CSMS teacher Suzanne Jennings assisted the Verizon team.
