Chalk Talk

Boy really knows his history

Michelle Orsi

Joshua Orsi, 14, holds the “National History Bee 2014 Middle School Champion” plaque he won during the Phoenix Regional Finals on Feb. 26 where he competed against 39 other students for the top honor. The homeschooled eighth grader will compete against other middle school students from around the country in the National History Bee in Atlanta June 6 – 8 where he has the potential to take home the big win.

Colonel Johnston Elementary School

Colonel Johnston Elementary School second grade students in Pamela Smith’s class learned about Black History Month in February by reading about those who have changed America through their fight to gain equal rights.

Students are participating in the Monster Exchange, a program designed to encourage the development of reading and writing skills while integrating Internet technology into the classroom curriculum. Johnston students have partnered with second grade students at Shaler Academy in Ridgefield, N.J. Each student designs an original picture of a monster and then types a description. The partnered classes exchange their descriptions via email. Students are then challenged to use reading comprehension skills to read the descriptions and translate them into a monster picture as close to the original as possible.
