FH students garner several awards in SSVEC, AFCEA YES Fair
Students from Sierra Vista Schools took several awards in the 2014 Youth Engineering and Science, or YES, Fair. Winners were announced March 13 at The Windemere Hotel and Conference Center, Sierra Vista.
This year’s YES Fair, sponsored by Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative and the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, drew 187 projects created by southeast Arizona students in grades 5 – 12. Winners in all categories, including honorable mention, won cash or other prizes.
Seventh and Eighth Grade Division (Multiple categories)
Grand prize – Rebecca Schverak; Colonel Smith Middle School, for her project, “Rolling Resistance.”
First place – Jacob Staggs for Physical Science; Colonel Smith Middle School
Third place – London Silvers for Biological; David King for Technical; Colin Owen and Ceara Sartalamacchia for Team; all from Smith Middle School
Fifth and Sixth Grade Division (Multiple categories)
Second place – Trace Crane for Physical Science; McKenna Heck for Technical; and Cara Bush and Madison Fichter for Team; all from Smith Middle School
Third place – Jonathan Beal for Biological; General Myer Elementary School
Honorable mention – Jasmine Bangle for Technical; Colonel Smith Middle School
