FH Tax Center still taking appointments

As the deadline for tax season is approaching, the staff at the Fort Huachuca Tax Assistance Center, or TAC, reminds military members, their Families and retirees that appointments are still available through April 17 — two days after the tax deadline.

As of March 21, the TAC had already filed 929 returns, resulting in $2.3 million in refunds and has saved over $181,000 in estimated tax preparation fees, said Amber Barss, Fort Huachuca TAC operations officer. According to Barss, the TAC is hoping to assist as many clients as last year by end of tax season, around 1,300 people.

Saving money on tax preparation fees may be especially important this year due to the increase in cost to file. The 1040 short form is $135, up from an estimated $100 in 2013.

“If you’re itemizing, that’s more expensive, also if you have any rental properties, that becomes more expensive as well,” Barss explained.

For those filing their taxes at the last minute, Barss advised the most important part of tax preparation is organization. One helpful tip is to keep track of expenses for deductions.

Tax assistance on post extends beyond the regular filing season. Barss explained that Soldiers returning from deployment after April 17 should make an appointment to file their taxes at the Fort Huachuca Staff Judge Advocate Office, or JAG, Building 51102, on Hatfield Street. In addition to helping late tax filers, JAG can also assist with tax amendments and Internal Revenue Service letters. For more information call 533.2009.

TAC is able to assist 30 – 40 people a day, taking appointments Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 533.1040. The TAC is located in Building 22324 on Christy Avenue.
