Air show coming to Davis-Monthan AFB this weekend

More than 200,000 people are expected to attend the “Thunder and Lightning over Arizona — honoring the past, inspiring the future” air show and open house at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson Saturday and Sunday.

According to Air Force officials, the show will be two days of nonstop entertainment. The event is open to the public, and parking and admission are free. Visitors are invited to bring non-perishable food which will be collected and donated to a local food bank in the Tucson area.

Swan Gate is located at Swan Road and Golf Links Road. It will be open for inbound (two lanes) and outbound (one lane) open house traffic, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The Swan Gate will be open for outbound (three lanes) open house traffic only, Saturday and Sunday from 3 – 5 p.m. The Craycroft Gate is located at Craycroft Road and Golf Links Road. It will be open for inbound open house traffic only, Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The Craycroft Gate will be open for outbound open house traffic only, Saturday and Sunday, 3 – 5 p.m.

Handicap visitors should use Craycroft entrance and stay in the far left lane. They must have a handicap card hanging from the mirror to use this entrance and handicap parking.

Personnel will be in place to direct traffic to open house parking both days of the event.

Tickets are not required for general entry. Bringing lawn or other chairs is not allowed, but chair rental is available at two locations. Personal carts may be used by physically challenged visitors.

All pets are prohibited from the air show grounds. However, service animals assisting physically challenged guests are authorized. At no time will pets be left unattended outside the area or in vehicles.

Gates to the event open at 9 a.m. Aerial demonstrations begin at 11 a.m. and end at approximately 3:30 p.m.

At 2 p.m., the Thunderbirds take to the air to entertain the audience. In addition to aerial performances, there will be a number of aircraft on display. Food, beverages and novelties will also be available for purchase.

A few tips can help make the experience more pleasurable.

Bring water bottles, sunscreen, hearing protection, sunglasses and protective hats or baseball caps.

Traffic in the areas surrounding Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is expected to be heavy. Golflinks Road will be closed from the Swan gate to the Craycroft gate.

During the open house the 355th Security Forces Squadron and Tucson Police Department wish to to minimize traffic congestion and provide spectators and Davis-Monthan personnel quick access to the base and parking areas. All spectators coming to the show will have to pass through a security checkpoint prior to entering the base. Guests should have all purses and other allowable bags open for search at the checkpoints.
