USO youth coloring contest

Join the Arizona United Services Organization Month of the Military Child coloring contest for those 1 – 13. Download sheets at http://us.uso.org/Arizona/Month-of-the-Military-Child/. Mail to USO Arizona, P.O. Box 21341, Phoenix, AZ 85036, by the April 30 deadline. Age groups are 1 – 3, 4 – 6 and 7 – 13. Children will win gift cards. Local schools are also invited to participate.

Catholic school accepting applications

All Saints Catholic School, 1425 Yaqui St., Sierra Vista, is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year for youth in pre-school (age 3) through 8th grade.

Non-catholic students are welcome.

Tuition assistance is available to all, especially students of military Families, and some may attend for free.

Join police officers for golf

The Sierra Vista Police Department will hold its Inaugural Golf Tournament Saturday, with shotgun start at 1:30 p.m., at the Pueblo del Sol Country Club, 2770 St. Andrews Dr.

Register now for this four-person scramble golf tournament. Entry fees are $33 for club members with their own carts, $46 for club members without carts and $75 for non-members. Fees include 18 holes of golf, riding cart, dinner and prizes.

Residential Refuse Customer Appreciation Day

Celebrate Earth Day — clean up and recycle for free, Saturday, 8 a.m. – noon at the Pete Castro Maintenance Center, 401 Giulio Cesare Ave., Sierra Vista. Get rid of trash, appliances, bulky items or household hazardous waste. City residential trash customers must bring a copy of their trash bill to participate.

Shred-It will be available to accept household documents for recycling, on a first-come, first-served basis until the truck is full.

Archery shoot slated

The Huachuca Mountain Archers and Bowhunters Club will host a 3-D archery shoot Saturday, 7 a.m. – noon at their range on post. Traditional and compound archers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Cost is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Comm-Unity Easter Sunrise Service

The 5th Annual Comm-Unity Easter Sunrise Service will take place on Sunday at 6 a.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial Park on East Fry Boulevard, Sierra Vista.

Seven local Christ-centered churches will participate. Everyone is invited. Bring lawn chair or blanket. Coffee and donuts served following the service.

Hospital plans event for new mothers

Sierra Vista Regional Health Center invites the public to attend a free community outreach event, Healing the New Mother’s Body, Mind and Spirit, “Mindfulness and Self-Compassion In the Transition to Motherhood”, given by Dr. Jennifer Breslin, Psychologist, who will explore well-being and mood during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

The event will be held on April 22, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., in the Mona Bishop Room, Sierra Vista Public Library, 2600 E. Tacoma St.

College singers to perform

Join Cochise College High Desert Singers, Vocalise and Note-ables as they present “In the Footlights,” a medley of Broadway music, Thursday and April 25, 7 p.m., at Kino Hall, St. Andrew Parish, 800 Taylor Dr., Sierra Vista. Seating is limited. Tickets are $5 and must be purchased in advance from choir members or by calling 249.2280.

March for mental health

On April 26, join NAMI on a 5K walk, three miles, to March for Mental Health. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the march begins at 8 a.m.

Vista 2030 — The Dream Continues

Since asking residents to “Dream Your City,” the City’s Community Development Department has been incorporating responses into a draft copy of the City’s General Plan, Vista 2030, scheduled to go before voters in this year’s General Election Ballot on Nov. 4.

The Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to review the draft plan and hear remarks at two public meetings.

The first takes place April 29, 5 p.m., at Sierra Vista Methodist Church Activity Center, 3225 St. Andrews Dr.

The second will be held May 6, 5 p.m., City Council Chambers, City Hall, 1011 N. Coronado Dr.

A draft copy of the plan is available at the Sierra Vista Public Library and online at www.SierraVistaAZ.gov (search “Vista 2030”).

Flycasters to show film

The San Pedro Flycasters Club will host the “F3T Fly Fishing Film Tour 2014,” May 2, 7 p.m. at Thunder Mountain Community Church, 4029 E. Golden Acres Dr. Sierra Vista.

Sierra Vista West End Street Fair

The Sierra Vista West End Street Fair takes place May 3, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., along Fry Boulevard from Garden to North Avenues. Entertainment includes Limelight Productions, Center of Gravity, Rowdy Johnson Band and a car show. There will be food and beverages, arts and crafts and other vendors. Admission is free.

Dressage group to meet, greet

The Cochise Dressage and Eventing Association will sponsor a free public meet-and-greet, May 3, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at High Desert Stables.

There will be riding and jumping demonstrations, veterinarian and hoof care talks, local horse rescues and a tack sale.

Carr House programs begin

Friends of the Huachuca Mountains open their season of free educational programs May 4, 1:30 p.m., with “Mining in Cochise County,” presented by Maudie Bailey, education coordinator for the Huachuca Mineral and Gem Club. This program will cover mineral specimens found and mined in the Huachuca Mountains, topographical mine locations and the history of mining in the area.

Take State Route 92 south to Carr Canyon Road adjacent to Mesquite Tree Restaurant, turn right, travel approximately 3 miles and turn left at the fork into the parking lot.

Genealogy club to meet

The Sierra Vista Genealogy Club will meet May 7, 1 – 4 p.m., at the Ethel Berger Center, 2950 E. Tacoma St. The topic is “They came from across the Sea,” covering early immigration to New England, Canada to the American Midwest, and the Delaware Valley.

Astronomy club to sponsor star event

On May 10, starting at 10 a.m., the Huachuca Astronomy Club will celebrate National Astronomy Day at the Sierra Vista Library, 2600 E. Tacoma St., until late afternoon, weather permitting. There will be several telescopes set up for safely viewing the sun and the afternoon moon.

Additional exhibits and astronomy-related materials inside and outside of the library, as well as a 1,000-yard scale model of the solar system. Everyone is welcome, and admission is free.

Gluten-free tasting event

May is Celiac Disease Awareness month. In support of raising awareness and options for a gluten free diet, the Landmark Café and The Brown Bag Cookie Company are hosting a no-cost gluten-free food tasting event at the Landmark Café, May 16, 11 a.m. – to 3 p.m. at 400 W. Fry Blvd., Sierra Vista.

In addition, the Arizona Allergen Alliance will be attending to share with individuals and families resources and information regarding food related allergies.

Adults and children who follow a strict gluten-free diet, or just curious about gluten-free products, are invited.

Mariachi Festival at Patagonia Lake

Attend a day of authentic Mexican music at the Mariachi Festival at Patagonia State Park May 17 beginning at 7 a.m. Admission is $15 per vehicle of up to four adults. Refreshments are available or bring your own. There will be a piñata for the children. Bring water, lawn chairs sunscreen and hats.

5k Race and Fun Walk

The Army Aviation Association of America will sponsor the 7th Annual AAAA 5K cross country race and 2 mile fun walk, May 17, 2014, at the Black Tower Unmanned Aircraft System Training Center. Run categories include: Top Overall Male/Female; Male/Female Age Groups 18 – 24, 25 – 32, 33 – 39, 40 – 49, 50+; five-person teams, military or civilian.

Love horses? CANTER needs horse handlers and side walkers to support its therapeutic riding program for children and adults with disabilities. No previous horse experience is necessary. CANTER operates Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at 7388 Chief Joseph off Moson Road.

National Get Outdoors Day

National Get Outdoors Day will be held at Parker Canyon Lake on June 14, 9 a.m. – 10 p.m. This is an annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun. Participating partners will offer opportunities for Families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities. Prime goals of the day are reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting youth to the outdoors.

Western music performer Jim Jones will appear at the Arizona Folklore Preserve on Saturday and Sunday.
