Don’t miss Festival of SW this weekend

The 2014 Festival of the Southwest runs this evening through Sunday at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Fry Boulevard, Sierra Vista. The festival is open to the public, and there is no admission charge. There will be attractions for the entire Family including the City of Fun Carnival, with rides for all ages.

The Festival will also offer free live entertainment all three days including: today, 7 – 11 p.m., “Nightlife” southeast Arizona’s premiere country dance band will take the stage.

Tomorrow, 7 – 11 p.m., “Kool Katz” will perform music from the 70s and 80s, plus Top 40 hits. And Sunday, 3 – 5 p.m., country duo “Partners” will close the festival.

Sunday, noon – 3 p.m. is also Family Day at the festival, with free activities for the entire Family, including Barney’s Backyard Barnyard Petting Zoo.

Calling all ‘dog people’

As part of the Festival of the Southwest, the 5-kilometer Mutt March will be held Saturday starting at 7:30 a.m.

Bring your pet and participate. Cost is $10 for pet and human. Refreshments and a t-shirt are included, while they last, and the awards for Sierra Vista’s 7th Annual Pet Idol competition will be presented. Pet kerchiefs may be purchased separately for $3 each. Also, vendors will offer pet-related items, services and information.

Register now for duathlon

Applications for the 2-10-2 Duathlon are now available at Barnes Field House and Eifler Fitness Center. The event is set for May 3 beginning at 7 a.m. at Brock Field.

The course consists of a 2-mile run, 10-mile bike ride, and 2-mile run. Cost for active duty and all others is $10 per individual, $20 per 2-person team, and $30 for 3-person team.

CDC offers evening child care May 3

New Beginnings Child Development Center will offer “Parents Night Out” May 3 from 6 – 10 p.m.

Reserve through May 1. Charges of $16 per child apply. Children must be registered with Child, Youth and School Services.

Free movie night set to return

FMWR will present a free Moonlight Movie May 10 at Warrior/Sentinel Field. The movie will start at dusk.

Free popcorn, hot dogs, water and soft drinks will be provided, while supplies last.

Mom deserves day off!

Everyone is invited to enjoy Thunder Mountain Activity Centre’s all-you-care-to-eat Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet, May 11, 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Cost, with gratuity included is $25 per person for adults; $12.50 for children 5 – 11; and no cost for children 4 and under.

The buffet will feature several gourmet entrees, assorted fresh fruit, seafood, salads, breakfast specialties, vegetables, potatoes, muffins, pasta and cheeses, plus a dessert buffet featuring the chocolate fountain.

Jazz, wine fest returns May 17

Everyone is invited to attend the 4th annual “An Evening on the Green” Jazz and Wine Festival May 17, 4 – 9 p.m. at Brown Parade Field.

Admission is free, and includes wine and beer tasting. Bottles of wine and beer will be available to purchase, and Thunder Mountain Activity Centre will offer food to purchase. Arts and craft vendors will also be available. Entertainment will be provided by the Military Intelligence Band Jazz Quintet.

Youth classes available at SKIES

Child, Youth and School Services SKIESUnlimited Program personnel offer several youth classes, including computer, gymnastics, piano lessons, cooking, karate, tae kwon do and dance.

Thunder Mountain Activity Centre personnel invite everyone to join them for their lunch buffet, now served Tuesdays through Fridays 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Cost is $8.95 for adults or $4.50 for children 5 – 11. All buffets include salad bar, desserts, rolls and a non-alcoholic beverage.
