Awbrie Bess, 11, a fifth grade student in Amy Wolfe’s class, created a collage with an aquatic theme.

From left, fifth grade students Jack Boucher, 10, and Coby Martin, 11, work on a collage during Nancy Murphy’s art class. The students were learning about the versatility of paper and working with media. Criteria included using different textures on their art project. Texture is one of the elements of art students are learning about to master the Arizona State Visual Arts Standards.

Pam Sherod’s fifth grade class went to the commissary on April 11. Robert Oates, store administrator, gave the students a tour of the produce and meat departments. The students learned about color blocks, product locator numbers, and where some fruits and vegetables are purchased.

Students also learned that the temperature in the commissary is always cool to help keep the produce fresh.

In the meat department, the class learned what the different color trays mean and were excited to see a cow’s heart. They thank Oates and the commissary for taking time for the visit. The other fifth grade classes also went to the commissary last month.
