DUI Memorial Vehicle is reminder of dangers of drinking, driving

City of Sierra Vista

An SUV with a crumpled front end and dented doors has been transformed into a symbol of the ultimate cost of driving under the influence — the death of a friend or loved one.
The black SUV is emblazoned with 262 white crosses, one for each person killed in 2013 in a DUI-related accident in Arizona, along with the drive sober slogan “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed … Into a Coffin.”

“Law enforcement has been telling people not to get behind the wheel after drinking, and to avoid riding with drivers who are impaired,” said Cpl. Scott Borgstadt, public information office for the Sierra Vista Police Department. “But we rarely show the real cost of driving under the influence. This memorial vehicle was created with the hope that people will see just how tragic and preventable a DUI-related death can be.”

The DUI Memorial Vehicle will be on display at several locations around the city in July. Locations include:

  • Target: until Monday
  • The Mall at Sierra Vista: Monday – July 21
  • Safeway: July 21 – 28

Sierra Vista was declared a “Be a Hero” city in 2011 by Mayor Rick Mueller. “Be a Hero” by being a designated driver. Some restaurants have agreed to provide free non-alcoholic beverages to designated drivers, and some cab companies will provide rides home at a discounted rate for persons under the influence.

For Sierra Vista businesses wishing to host the DUI Memorial Vehicle in their parking lot or for more information, call 520.452.7500.
